How It Works

What is net worth?

Your net worth is a snapshot of your financial health at a single point in time. It's calculated with one simple formula:

Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities

  • Assets are things you own that have value: cash and bank balances, investment and retirement accounts, the market value of property and vehicles, and other valuables.
  • Liabilities are what you owe: your mortgage, student and car loans, credit-card balances, and any other debts.

A positive net worth means you own more than you owe. A negative net worth (common early on, e.g. with student loans or a new mortgage) simply means your debts currently exceed your assets.

Using this calculator
  1. Pick your currency.
  2. Fill in the Assets list with the current value of everything you own. Rename an item by typing in its label.
  3. Fill in the Liabilities list with your outstanding balances.
  4. Add or remove rows with the Add and buttons. The summary, bar, and category breakdown update instantly.
Reading the results
  • The bar compares your total assets to your total liabilities, scaled to whichever is larger.
  • The debt-to-asset ratio is liabilities ÷ assets. Below 0.5 is generally comfortable; above 1.0 means you owe more than you own.
  • The category breakdown shows what share each item contributes to your total assets or liabilities — useful for spotting concentration (e.g. most of your worth tied up in one property).
Saved locally: Your currency and every item are stored in your browser with localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server, and your balance sheet will still be here when you come back on this device.
Disclaimer: This calculator is for personal tracking and educational purposes only and is not financial advice. Use current market values, and revisit periodically — net worth is most useful as a trend over time.
